There’s something about lighting a candle that instantly changes the vibe of a room.

The flicker of the flame. The fragrance slowly filling the air. That little moment when you finally exhale and think, okay… this feels so good.

But getting the most out of your candle is about more than simply lighting the wick.

Proper candle care helps your candle burn more evenly, perform beautifully, and last longer. And when you invest in a beautifully crafted candle, you want to enjoy every last bit of it.

Whether you’re new to candles or consider yourself a candle connoisseur, this is your guide to getting the best experience from your Vibes Candle.

1. The First Burn Matters Most

If there’s one candle-care tip to remember, make it this one:

Give your candle enough time to create a full melt pool on its first burn.

When you light a candle for the first time, allow the wax to melt evenly across the surface before extinguishing it. This helps establish a consistent burn pattern for the life of the candle.

A good rule of thumb is to allow approximately 1 hour of burn time for every inch of the candle’s diameter, while always following the specific manufacturer’s recommended maximum burn time.

For Vibes Candles, we recommend keeping your first burn long enough for the melted wax to reach the edges of the vessel without allowing the candle to burn for an excessive amount of time.

Why does this matter?

Because candles can develop what is commonly called tunneling, where the wax burns down the center while leaving a ring of unmelted wax around the sides.

Once tunneling develops, your candle may continue following that same burn pattern.

Think of the first burn as setting the stage for everything that comes after it.

2. Trim Your Wick Before Every Burn

Your wick doesn’t need to be long to create a beautiful flame.

In fact, a properly trimmed wick helps create a more controlled burn.

Before lighting your candle, allow the wax to cool completely and trim the wick to approximately 1/4 inch.

A wick that’s too long can contribute to a larger flame, excess soot, smoke, and an uneven burn.

And let’s be honest, there’s something satisfying about using a beautiful wick trimmer as part of your candle ritual.

Trim. Light. Set The Vibe.

3. Don’t Burn Your Candle for Too Long

We know the feeling.

You light your favorite candle in the afternoon, get distracted, and suddenly it’s been burning for hours.

But longer isn’t necessarily better.

For safety and optimal candle performance, follow the burn-time recommendations provided by the candle maker. As a general rule, many container candles perform best when burned for a few hours at a time rather than continuously.

Always extinguish your candle if the flame becomes too large, the vessel becomes excessively hot, or the candle reaches the manufacturer’s recommended stopping point.

Never leave a burning candle unattended.

And always keep a burning candle away from drafts, children, pets, and anything that could catch fire.

4. Let the Wax Cool Completely

After you’ve enjoyed your candle, give it time to cool before moving it.

Hot wax and hot glass can cause burns, and moving a candle while the wax is liquid can disturb the way it sets.

If you’ve created a beautiful melt pool, resist the temptation to move the candle around while it’s still warm.

Let it do its thing.

Cool. Set. Reset.

Then it’s ready for its next burn.

5. Keep the Wick Centered

As your candle burns, keep an eye on the wick.

If the wick begins leaning toward one side of the vessel, carefully reposition it while the wax is still soft—but only when the candle is extinguished and safe to handle.

A centered wick helps the candle burn more evenly and can help prevent one side of the vessel from becoming significantly hotter than the other.

6. Keep Your Candle Away From Drafts

Where you place your candle matters.

Air movement from an open window, fan, air conditioner, or high-traffic area can cause a flame to flicker excessively.

A dancing flame might look pretty, but too much movement can contribute to uneven burning and soot.

For the best experience, place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from drafts.

7. Don’t Burn Your Candle All the Way to the Bottom

We know you want every last drop.

But there comes a point when your candle has done its job.

Once only a small amount of wax remains at the bottom of the vessel, it’s time to retire the candle.

Continuing to burn a candle when there isn’t enough wax remaining can cause the vessel to become excessively hot.

When in doubt, blow it out.

Your candle has given you its final vibe. Time to let it go.

8. Never Use the Lid to Extinguish Your Candle Unless the Manufacturer Says It’s Safe

Some candles are specifically designed with lids that can safely be used for extinguishing the flame. Others are not.

Always follow the candle maker’s instructions.

For a traditional container candle, our candle snuffer can be a simple and elegant way to extinguish the flame without creating unnecessary smoke.

And if you’ve never used one before, consider this your sign to add one to your candle-care collection.

9. Don’t Blow Out Your Candle in a Hurry

Blowing out a candle can create smoke and potentially send small amounts of melted wax outside the vessel.

Our candle snuffer or wick dipper can make extinguishing your candle a much cleaner experience.

At Vibes, we think candle care can be part of the ritual, not just maintenance.

There’s something lovely about slowing down enough to intentionally extinguish the flame.

10. Give Your Candle a Little Love Between Burns

When your candle isn’t burning, keep it somewhere cool and dry and away from direct sunlight.

Dust can also collect on the wax over time.

If your candle has a lid, use it to help keep the surface clean between burns.

And before your next burn?

Trim the wick.

That’s it.

A tiny bit of care can make a big difference.

What About Candle Tunneling?

Let’s talk about one of the most common candle questions.

Why is my candle burning down the middle?

That’s tunneling.

It can happen when a candle hasn’t been allowed to develop a sufficient melt pool during previous burns, particularly early in its life.

The best way to prevent it is to practice good burning habits from the beginning, especially during that first burn.

If your candle has already developed some tunneling, don’t panic. Depending on how severe it is, allowing a longer, supervised burn may help the wax catch up with the outer edges.

However, never leave a candle unattended or allow it to burn beyond the manufacturer’s recommended time.

Why Candle Care Matters at Vibes

We believe a candle should be more than something that smells good.

It’s an experience.

From the wax blend and fragrance to the vessel, wick, and final burn, every part of a candle contributes to how it performs.

That’s why candle making isn’t simply about pouring wax into a vessel.

It’s about understanding how all of those elements work together.

At Vibes Candles, every candle is hand-poured with intention using our carefully developed soy wax blend, perfume-grade fragrances, and plant-based fiber cotton wicks.

And because we believe the little details matter, we want you to know how to get the very best experience from the candle you’ve brought into your home.
